With unique colors, patterns, and textures, natural stone is a material that is so versatile in nature that it can be overwhelming. No two stones are exactly alike, leaving the options for your project endless. Natural stones such as granite, marble, and travertine are available in a variety of finishes, each affecting the aesthetic appearance and its care and maintenance requirements. With the nearly infinite number of stone combinations and types of stone finishes, selecting the right one may seem overwhelming, but it’s simpler than you may think.

Polished

As the name suggests, a polished finish will give your stone a shiny and glossy appearance. This finish generally brings out the color of the stone and is a great choice for kitchen and bathroom countertops. Polished stone provides a smooth work surface and protects the stone against spills and stains since it easy to clean. In addition to countertops, polished stone works well as flooring to create an elegant look.

Honed

Honed–or matte finish–produces a flat surface and softens the appearance of the stone. The muted look provides a smooth surface while also retaining the character of the stone. Honed stone is commonly used for countertops, backsplashes, and flooring. The less reflective surface can also help conceal flaws such as scratches or scuff marks in high-traffic areas.

Leathered

Leathered finish, also known as brushed finish, is similar to honed but has a little more depth and variation. Leathered finishes are commonly found in quartzite, granite, and marble stones. This finish is great for use in bathrooms as it makes surfaces less slippery, but also adds depth and character to the room as well. Other applications include statement pieces such as fireplace surrounds and bar tops.

Flamed

Commonly applied to granite, flamed finish is a process where a high-temperature flame is applied to the surface of the stone to create a textured, non-slip finish with semi-rough surface. Since it creates a deeply textured surface, this finish is great for use outside to create slip resistance.

Natural Cleft

Mainly used for exterior applications such as paths, patios, and wall cladding, natural cleft finish is matte and is determined based on how the stone is quarried. Stones with natural layers such as limestone or slate can be cut on the exact natural fissure of the layer allowing them to be used without applying any finish. Natural cleft finish has little to no smoothness since each stone has a unique texture and cut. Natural cleft stones are anti-slip making them perfect for use around pools, for example.
