Marble Countertops Pros

When it comes to kitchen countertops, many designers and homeowners immediately gravitate toward marble. There are a few reasons for that.

Beautiful Material

The most obvious reason people choose marble for countertops and other surfaces in their homes is simple: it’s stunning. Marble is the epitome of elegance and makes a bold statement in any room. White marble is a classic material and is often used for its design versatility, but marble is also available in a variety of colors including black, gray, and green to name a few.

Increases Home Value

When properly cared for, natural stone lasts for years and can add value to your home. When selling, marble countertops not only make a great impression on potential buyers but realtors as well. Marble countertops are a potential upselling point on your home’s listing.

Natural Stone is Unique

As a stone, marble is a naturally occurring material which means no two are exactly alike. Depending on its composition, the colors and veining can vary from stone to stone. As mentioned, white and black are the most common marble colors but depending on the minerals, your marble can come in green, yellow, and even pink hues.

Heat Resistant

Marble is a heat-resistant material and can stand up well to hot pots and pans. However, you should take care placing a hot pan directly on the surface for the risk of discoloration or burning the surface—always place an oven mitt or potholder down first!

Cons of Marble Countertops

No natural stone is perfect and marble is no exception. While the material is stunning and can bring value to the home, it also has some disadvantages compared to other materials.

Porous

Marble is a very porous material which means it can soak up liquids and possibly stain the surface. One way to help prevent staining is to professionally seal the surface upon installation and every 6 or so months following.

Scratches Easily

Marble is on the softer side of natural stones and more vulnerable to scratching. While you can choose a matte, honed finish to hide the scratches, it will not stop them from happening. Be sure to always use a cutting board and take care wearing metal jewelry and accessories around it to prevent scratching.

Changes with Age

As marble ages, it will change. Over decades, you will see the surface begin to darken and stains and etching begin to become more noticeable and uniform instead of accidental. As marble ages, it does not lose its beauty but instead tells more of a story of its life. With regular use, all countertops will show wear and tear, but you can extend its life by sealing and maintaining it properly.
